What is a public adjuster?
The Department of Financial Services felt there was a need for adjusters that
represented the policyholder, not the insurance company. The insurance companies
hire insurance adjusters to come out to your home, however there is a conflict of
interest when they represent both the homeowner and the insurance company. We
only represent the interests of the policyholder.
How does a public adjuster get paid?
The Florida Department of Financial Services has determined that our compensation
will fall between 10%-20% of the total claim amount that you receive before your
deductible is applied. If you don't get paid, we don't get paid. If, however our public
adjuster's fee were to become hourly, the hourly charge for our estimator is $250/hour.
Public Adjuster & Umpire fees across the Nation can range from $250/hour to
$750/hour. Our compensation is very similar to how a lawyer or a realtor collects their
commission. We work hard for you, the policyholder. It is in our best interest to
make sure that you receive the largest settlement check possible.
Why should I hire a public adjuster?
A policy contains a lot of information that is difficult to read. They're written by the
insurance company and often they are confusing to you, the insured. Most insureds
will only handle 1 or 2 claims during their entire lifetime whereas most Public
Adjusters handle hundreds of losses every year. After a loss, you need a Public
Adjuster on your side. We can help you prepare to file the claim, understand your
policy terms as well as fill out all of the proper forms. We will be with you every step
of the way. Remember, our best interest is in the policyholder and making sure you
are paid for everything that you are owed.
Is the builder/handyman estimate good enough to make sure that I
get a fair settlement?
No! The builder/handyman estimate is often very brief and doesn't include all of the
detail that an insurance company needs to see. Builders/handymen often do not take
the time to measure your loss properly. After a hurricane, they are writing 8-10
estimates a day and simply hope to earn 2 of those jobs. They also do not include
things like: contents loss, refrigerator food loss, additional living expenses, loss of
use, loss of rental income, etc... Our detailed estimates will enable us to go through
line by line with the insurance company adjuster's estimate -- comparing apples with
apples. This is not possible with a builder/handyman estimate.
How long does this process take?
A normal claim can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months before your first check
comes in from your insurance company. There are times in which the independent or
company adjuster writes a check the same day as his/her inspection. It often depends
on the severity of the claim and if our estimate is in agreement with theirs. We will
try to have your claim processed in a timely manner by making phone calls and
sending letters on a regular basis to your insurance companies' adjuster, file examiner
and/or claims supervisors. If those letters & phone calls don't work, we will help you
file a complaint with the insurance commissioner's office.
